Pathogen Detection

Every year, more than one million women in the U.S. contract urinary tract infections, vaginitis or bacterial vaginosis. The latter is fairly common (10% - 15%) for women of childbearing age and is the reason for an estimated 20 million annual medical visits. The three most common diseases included in the terms “vaginosis” and “vaginitis” are bacterial vaginosis (40% - 45%), vulvovaginal candidiasis (20% - 25%), and trichomoniasis (15% - 20%). In some cases, the etiology may be mixed, and there may be more than one disease present. The most common causative agents responsible for these conditions, as well as many other commensal and pathogenic microbes (see reverse), are detected by GenLab Solutions qPCR testing solution for vaginal microbiota.

By providing higher sensitivity and specificity when compared to traditional culture-based methods through qPCR, GenLab Solutions is able to deliver accurate and reliable results for “vaginosis” and “vaginitis” diagnoses. Using the latest molecular biology techniques, GenLab Solutions is able to use the genetic material of the pathogen (DNA and RNA) to accurately identify the species of the pathogen and to detect resistance genes expressed by the pathogen to certain pharmacotherapies.
